Sleep DisordersSleep disorders are becoming a growing nuisance. Individuals who lead a hectic lifestyle, while juggling between work, home and family are becoming more and more vulnerable to acquiring sleep disorders. When there is lack of proper sleep it leads to road mishaps, poor performance in the class for children, or doing a job efficiently. Moreover, intimate relationships have also known to get the brunt when couples develop sleep problems.
There are countless sleep disorders starting from the most trivial ones to some disorders we have never even heard before. No one is exempt from sleep disorders – be it our newborn children, youngsters, senior citizens and even our loveable pets! Bedwetting is one of those sleep problems that little children have but slowly come out of it when they grow up and have better control over their bladders. One more sleep disorder like narcolepsy might not have a full cure and can only be controlled with the right treatment and medicine together with therapy to change sleep behavior. When you read this article, you will come to know of a few kinds of sleep disorders that can affect our patterns of sleep. Insomnia This is one of the most common forms of sleep disorders faced by the youth. It results in having problems to fall asleep as well as remaining asleep for any length of time. It is cased by depression or anxiety. Women are more vulnerable to insomnia than the men folk. For treating insomnia doctors usually give melatonin. Good sleeping patterns and behavioral therapies have wonderful positive effects on insomnia. Sleep ApneaThis disorder is characterized by ceasing of breath while asleep. There are times when breathlessness occurs so repeatedly that the person cannot even sleep. This takes place when the brain at times could not remember to send signals to the respiratory system to inhale and exhale. In some people this is manifested in the form of snoring. Treatments prescribed for sleep apnea can be in the form of respiratory apparatus, behavioral therapies, and in certain cases, surgery. NarcolepsyHere the capability of the central nervous system to regulate the sleep practices becomes impaired. It is manifested in the form of feeling excessively sleepy during the day, hallucinations while asleep, or even when wide awake, and a sudden temporary loss of control over the muscles. This sleep disorder can be countered with counseling, medications for helping to relax and behavioral therapies. Restless Leg SyndromeThis is a disorder of the nervous system and induces the person to move his or her legs without stopping. It is also accompanied by tingly and uncomfortable sensations in the legs. This is a most intolerable feeling that the person can never get some peaceful sleep time. Techniques of self-help are meted out to treat RLS. At times, therapists also prescribe iron supplements and application of electrical stimulations to the feet and legs of the person. Individuals with RLS sleep on their sides with pillows kept between the legs to bring sleep. In certain cases, exercises and messages also prove helpful. Jet LagJet lag is a physiological difficulty characterized by dehydration, loss of appetite, headaches, insomnia, or irregular patterns of sleep. The condition affects the body clock of those who travel, shift workers and the like. Travelers who hop from one time zone to another suffer from jet lag as the body clock becomes out of sync and cannot align itself immediately with the time at the destination. It is advised that to prevent jet lag the best solution is to wake up and retire to sleep as per the destination time. It is also good to expose oneself to sunlight to counter the effects of jet lag.
